The  True Heroes

I have a purple heart
Packed away in that old chest
I never get it out
Or display it upon my chest

It's not that I'm ashamed
Of the things in war I've done
It's just that I'm humbled
Because I made it back home

My mother's face was not streaked
By grieving tears that fell
My father's heart was not broken
By the truth that was is hell

My body did not return
Lying underneath a colored cloth
I may have paid a price
But it was not the ultimate cost

Some salute me as a hero
Others don't make a sound
Like the silent voices of the fallen
Who's blood soaked that foreign ground

I keep my memories hidden
But try to let others know
As for me, the ones that died
Are the true heroes
